DOG DAZER REALLY WORKS!

June 14, 2006

Process servers are 50 times more likely to be attacked by a dog than assaulted by a
person.  For this reason, many process servers carry what's called a "dog dazer".  I have
owned my dog dazer for the last 11 years and have used it on countless occasions.  I am
convinced it has prevented me from being seriously bitten at least 5 times.  The dog
dazer is a small hand held device that, by pushing a button, sends out a safe,
high-frequency tone audible only to animals.  It's similar to a dog whistle but much more
effective.  Most dogs run away and hide.  Here are some tips to keep you from being
bitten.

- When arriving at a property where you think a dog may be, make some noise.  Whistle
and call out for any dog that may be in the area.

- If approached by a dog NEVER turn your back, that's when they may attack.

- If surprised by a vicious dog, walk backwards and get back in your car.  When you first
arrive, leave your car door open for quick entry.  If getting in your car is not an option,
jump on top of your car.  (I've had to do this twice, once denting my hood, but I wasn't
bitten.)

- Always speak to a dog in a soothing voice like baby talk.

- Look for tail wagging; an indicator that the dog only wants to play.

- Look for "Beware of Dog" signs and take them seriously.  No service is worth getting
bitten.

- Don't rely on your dog dazer to be 100% effective.  There are some dogs that don't back
down to anything.

Many times, I have been approached by what I thought was a vicious dog.  Then when I
start the "baby talk" they realize I am not a threat, change their attitude and start the tail
wagging.  Most dogs are happy to see you.  Never "daze" a dog unless you feel
threatened.
